Chelsea Luo

Optimist Creative Fellow

Claremont McKenna College & Los Angeles

Chelsea, a first-generation Chinese-American from Guam, is currently studying government and media studies at Claremont McKenna College. Passionate about social issues, she aims to spotlight marginalized communities often overlooked by mainstream media. Her professional involvement spans various spheres, from conducting public policy research and drafting legislation in local government to advocating for gender equality through her engagement with Women in International Security. She also spent a summer coaching rock bands and teaching guitar and drums to LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent youth at an arts camp. She harbors a deep love for both film and music. In particular, she enjoys listening to hip hop, rock, and jazz.

Why I’m excited to join Optimist as a Creative Fellow:

I’m thrilled to work with such an inspiring group of people dedicated to making a difference through storytelling! I’m particularly excited to learn more about the intersection of impact and media spaces, which aligns well with my different academic and creative interests. While I have some experience in cinematography by working with various cameras in my film classes, I look forward to learning more about documentary filmmaking techniques and contributing to various projects this summer.
